Mudflow gets wilder as central dyke collapses again

The hot mudflow from Lapindo Brantas Inc. drilling operations in Porong, Sidoarjo, East Java, has not died down but even grew wilder causing the central dyke to collapse again on Sunday.

The head of the design and supervision unit of the national team in charge of controllong the mudflow, Arie Setyadi, said the 20-meter high dyke had collapsed after incessant rains.

“Because the rain continued to fall since Saturday night the central dyke at kilometer-47 collapsed and mud moved towards Siring or precisely to a pond in Jatirejo. We are now speeding to overcome the problem and hope it could be overcome today,” he said.

The flow of hot mud at KM47 to the village of Siring in the subdistrict of Porong again threatened rail tracks. Unless it could be overcome immediately it would inundate the tracks.

The national team in cooperation with the Sidoarjo Mudflow Control Agency continued making repairs and raising the dyke to stop the flow.

Residents of Tanggulangin Sejahtera I meanwhile held a special prayer service at the Sidoarjo grand mosque to convey their gratitude after their demand for compensation was fulfilled.

Around 1,000 people attended the service including several members of the House of Representatives, the East Java regional legislative assembly and the Sidoarjo local legislative assembly.

Sujari, one of the residents attending the service, said “what we have demanded have been fulfilled by the President although the compensation would be paid first in the form of an advance payment totalling 20 percent (of the total). Therefore as an expression of gratitude we agreed to hold the service so that the crisis could be immediately overcome.”

He said the Team 16 thanked that the demand for compensation had been fulfilled and promised not to hold rallies again.

“Perhaps after the service we the residents of Tanggulaning Sejahtera I especially Team 16 will not conduct rallies again. We are already very grateful as our demand has been fulfilled,” he said.

Some residents of the housing complex meanwhile are still in Jakarta in their effort to demand the full payment of the compensation.
